Shamakhi County is located in the center of East Azerbaijan. The city borders with the city of Shabran and Guba from north, the city of Hajiqabul from south, Qobustan from East, and the cities of Ismailli and Agsu from West.
In the past, the city was known as a market town and now is famous as a small historical town.
The city has a rich heritage and has provided the backdrop to major political events throughout much of its two millennia of existence.
Shamakhi city was an important city in medieval times. According to old scripts, Shamakhi was the capital of Shirvan Shahs (king Shirvan) which was transferred to Baku at the time of the earthquake.
The majority of its population is Azerbaijanis, while Russians, Lezgians and Tats constitute other minorities. They speak Azerbaijani language, Russian language, Lezgian language and Tati language respectively.
Attractions
It is famous for its traditional dancers. The city is home to Shirvan Domes, a 15th-century mausoleum and graveyard located at the foot of Gulistan Fortress. The music scene in Shamakhi can be traced back to ancient times and villages of Baku, generally revered as the fountainhead of Mugham in the Azerbaijan.
Juma Mosque of Shamakhi is the biggest religious structure and a significant monument of the city. Old mosques were destroyed in the earthquake.
