Nakhchivan County is in the center of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic of Azerbaijan which is boarding with Armenia to the east and north, Iran to the south and west, and Turkey to the northwest. It is one of the old cities and located in the east of Azerbaijan, and it also has been commute route of merchants on Silk Road.
The area that is now Nakhchivan became part of the Safavid dynasty of Iran in the 16th century. In 1828, after the last Russo-Persian War and the Treaty of Turkmenchay, the Nakhchivan Khanate passed from Iranian into Imperial Russian possession.
The city residents speak in Azerbaijani.
How to travel to Nakhchivan
You need a visa to travel to the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic of Azerbaijan at the Jolfa border by paying 13 manat. After crossing the border, taxis waiting for you to bring you to Nakhchivan. From Nakhchivan to Julfa border is only 40 km.
Geography and Climate
Nakhchivan is a semi-desert region. The Zangezur Mountains make up its border with Armenia while the Aras River defines its border with Iran. The Araz reservoir located on that river supplies water for agricultural needs and the hydroelectric dam generates power for both Azerbaijan and Iran.
Nakhchivan is extremely arid and mountainous. Its highest peak is Mount Kapudzhukh and its most distinctive is Ilandag (Snake Mountain), which is visible from Nakhchivan City. Qazangödağ is another major peak.
Nakhchivan has semi-arid climate, particularly with scorching sun in summer, however, winters are harsh and snowy. So, it can be said that its climate is very much similar to the northwestern provinces of Iran. The best time to go to Nakhichevan is spring and summer.
Tourism Attractions
Nakhchivan is one of the cultural centers of Azerbaijan. Theatrical art greatly contributed to Nakhchivan's culture. There are many monuments and attractions including Momine Khatun tomb, Ashabi-Kahf cave, Aras Lake, Duzdagh Cave, East bathroom, Golestan garden, Juma Mosque, and so on.
The architecture of Nakhchivan buildings and the urban environment are similar to other cities of Azerbaijan, but rather cleaner and less crowded.
